Chapter Six
Rhys couldn’t take any more of Stryker’s stubbornness. The man didn’t like to have anything done for him—except when Rhys got down on his knees. Then he let Rhys do whatever he wanted.
Stryker had let up talking about their future, though he still told Rhys he loved him every day. Rhys had caught on that Stryker felt like his injury was a weakness. For the past two weeks, they’d spent far more time talking and much less time having sex. Stryker’s life fascinated Rhys, but it scared him as well. He worked both as an assassin and as a bounty hunter, and Rhys didn’t like thinking about the danger involved. Stryker had hinted that he could give it up, but he hadn’t given a straight answer yet. Was he waiting for Rhys to make a declaration?
Rhys sighed as he looked for the vial of oil. The herbal concoction was supposed to help Stryker’s muscles relax, but he hadn’t been using it. Rhys was ready to make him, and he knew exactly how to do it. When he found the oil, he went to Stryker’s room.
Stryker looked up at Rhys through heavy lids. “I fell asleep. Sorry.”
“Don’t be.” Rhys reached over and began unfastening Stryker’s pants.
Stryker smiled. “Something you need, baby?”
Rhys pulled his pants down and off. “Yes. I’m going to give you a massage with this.” He set the oil aside and got on his knees. “It looks better, but you need to stay off of it more. Each time it gets better, you ruin things by overdoing it. I’m not useless. I can do things on the ship if you tell me how.”
Stryker’s smile faded. “I know, Rhys.” He toyed with Rhys’s hair. “I’m supposed to take care of you.”
“And you do. Where would I go? What would I do? I’d be lost and alone without you.” He oiled his hands up. “Now, let me do this for you. If this is a relationship, I’m supposed to take care of you, too.”
“My head knows that, but I don’t like it. I don’t … I don’t like looking weak in front of you.”
Rhys massaged the sides of Stryker’s knee gently. “Glad you can admit that. You aren’t weak—not at all. You were fighting a guy twice your size to save me, to protect me. I want to help make you better.”
Rhys worked his fingers in circles around the knee, occasionally working his fingers up Stryker’s thigh.
Stryker let out a contented sigh. “That feels good, baby.”
“This stuff is good for your muscles.”
“I mean your hands. I love your touch.”
“I’m glad,” Rhys said. “I love touching you.” Rhys could feel Stryker staring at him. “I love traveling with you.”
“Do you?”
“Yes,” Rhys said, focusing on the massage. “My life has more meaning now. I’m not waiting around to follow orders. I’m not a sex toy that can be cast aside. You love me like no one else ever has. I was confused at first, but I know this was meant to be.”
“Us?”
Rhys nodded, moving his hands up.
